Barges

1.
Out of my window, looking in the night
I can see the barges' flickering light
Silently flows the water to the sea
And the barges, too, float silently.

Chorus
Barges, I would like to go with you.
I would like to sail the ocean blue.
Barges, have you treasure in your hold?
Do you fight with pirates, brave and bold?

2.
Out of my window, looking in the night
I can see the barges' flickering light
Starboard shines green, and port is ruby red
And the barges signal far ahead.

Chorus

3.
Out of my window, looking in the night
I can see the barges flickering light.
Tiny little ships floating solemnly,
as they sail to meet their destiny.

Chorus

4.
Out of my window, looking in the night,
I can see the barges flickering light.
Sailing blindly out into the sea,
how brave, how courageous, please take me.

Chorus

5.
Out of my window, looking in the night,
I can see the barges flickering light.
Never knowing where the journey leads,
the barges sail on to be free.

Chorus

6.
How my heart longs to sail away with you
As you sail across the ocean blue.
But I must stay beside my window clear
As the barges sail away from here.

Chorus

7.
Out of my window, looking in the night
I can see the barges' flickering light
Taking their cargo out into the sea
How I wish that someday they'd take me.

Chorus

8.
Out of my window, looking in the night
I can see the barges' flickering light
Now is the time when I will soon be gone
And I'll sail with barges on and on.

Chorus

9.
Barges, I am going now with you
I am going to sail the ocean blue
Barges, we have treasures in our hold
As we fight with pirates brave and bold.

(Note from Moses -

Well, I have told campers for many years that this song was written by a hospitalized young girl who watched the barges sailing on the Erie Canal. However, a search online to find any other details of the origin of the story revealed that there are many legends about the origin. What is the truth about the origin of Barges?

We sing this at camp throughout the week and then sing it again during the barge ceremony at Lake Chamberlain on Thursday night as barges sail across the lake.)
